Ketubah
What is a Ketubah?
Simply put, a Ketubah is a Jewish wedding contract.
What does a Ketubah say?
We have many options of Ketubah text to choose from, as well as an option to write your own. While these days, different denomenations have different requirements and allowances for ketubah text, it is essentially a contract between partners on their wedding day, stating their obligations to each other. Some denominations use text that is relatively standardized, for example, an orthodox Ketubah does not generally differ from couple to couple, whereas a secular couple may choose to write their own Ketubah, treating it more like an extension of their vows. In either case, if you are being married by a Rabbi, we strongly recommend you show the text to them before purchasing.
What is the process for ordering a Ketubah?
Start by choosing the Ketubah design that speaks to you from our collection of exclusive artwork. Once on the product page, you’ll select your preferred level of personalization—Fill-in-the-Blank, Personalized, or Customized—based on what’s right for your ceremony.
After placing your order, you’ll receive our Ketubah Form by email. This form allows you to share any relevant details based on the level of personalization you selected, such as names, wedding date and location, language preferences, and any personalization or customization requests.
Before anything is printed, we’ll review your submission and follow up if we have questions. If applicable, we recommend sharing your text with your Rabbi or officiant for approval prior to production.
If at any point you feel unsure or overwhelmed, pause, take a breath, and feel free to reach out to us at shalom@shoptchotchke.com—we’re happy to help.
Can you translate my text for me?
Yes! Translation services are included when you select Customized Ketubah at checkout. The $150 customization fee covers translation.
Are all of the Ketubot Kosher?
It depends on what denomenation you are. Technically a Kosher ketubah should not have any English or Hebrew, but should be written in Aramaic. Most of our Ketubot can be made Kosher, which will be the case anytime Orthodox or Conservative text options are chosen. If a specific design can not be made Kosher, we won't offer that design with the Orthodox text. Outside of Orthodox, and to a lesser extent, Conservative Ketubot, there are fewer guidelines, but we still do strongly recommend you share the final text with your Rabbi for review before printing.
How long will it take to receive my Ketubah?
4-6 weeks. Every Ketubah is different, so after you place an order and fill out the details of what you want on the Ketubah through the form we send you, we will make any updates requested and then send you a proof to review. We suggest you and your Rabbi review the proof carefully, so we can make any updates before printing. After the proof is approved, it takes about a week to print and ship the Ketubah. If you need your Ketubah faster, just let us know and we'll try to make it happen!
What if our wedding is postponed?
If you have already ordered and received your Ketubah, but your wedding date was postponed, let us know as soon as possible and we would be happy to send you a new Ketubah with an updated date. We just ask that you pay for shipping, but there is no charge for the replacement Ketubah.
Does my Rabbi need to approve the Ketubah?
If you're getting married by a Rabbi, we recommend it, but the decision is yours. We will provide a proof that you can send to the Rabbi, and they might have input for you.
What kind of pen should I use to sign the ketubah?
We'll send you a Pigma Micron Archival pen to sign with in the color that looks best with the design you choose. We also provide an extra piece of paper for you to practice signing before commiting to the real thing.
What if I don't know how to write my Hebrew name in Hebrew?
There are a handful of resources online that let you type in English or pick from a list in English and then will give you the Hebrew name, otherwise, just let us know what it is in English and we'll do our best to translate it for you.
What if I don't know my Hebrew name?
Some people choose to use the transliteration of their English name. If you ask Google for a transliteration of your name into Hebrew, we've found that to work well. We recommend you check with your Rabbi if you decide to do this because it's not universally accepted.
Who should sign my Ketubah?
It all depends how kosher you want to be- for an Orthodox wedding, the Rabbi and 2 unrelated male witnesses sign the Ketubah, not the couple getting married. Many couples these days like to sign their own Ketubah, and don't have the requirement that the witnesses be male. Ultimately the decision is up to you and your Rabbi. We are happy to print more or fewer signature lines on your Ketubah, and label them however you prefer.
What are the different levels of personalization?
We offer three levels of personalization so you can choose the option that best fits your needs:
Fill-in-the-Blank Ketubah
Uses one of our standard text options with designated blanks for names, wedding date, location, and signature lines. The text appears in both English and Hebrew.
Personalized Ketubah (+$75)
Uses one of our standard text options with names, wedding date, and location professionally typeset directly into the body of the ketubah text. The text appears in both English and Hebrew.
Customized Ketubah (+$150)
Create a fully custom text or modify an existing text to fit your preferences. Your personal details are professionally typeset directly into the body of the ketubah text, and this option includes translation services. The text may appear in English and Hebrew, English only, or Hebrew only.
Does personalizing or customizing a Ketubah cost extra?
Yes—pricing varies based on the level of personalization you choose.
A Fill-in-the-Blank Ketubah uses our provided text with blanks and does not include an additional personalization fee.
A Personalized Ketubah, which includes names, dates, and locations professionally typeset directly into the text, is available for an additional $75.

Yes. Our Fill-in-the-Blank Ketubah uses one of our provided text options with blanks for names, wedding date, and location to be filled in by hand. By default, the Ketubah will include both English and Hebrew text, as well as signature lines.
What is the difference between a Personalized and a Customized Ketubah?

Product
Are your products Kosher?
All of our products are Kosher except we do sell 2 different Mezuzah scrolls- one that is Kosher and one that is not.
Will your Menorahs and Shabbos Candlesticks fit regular candles?
They sure will. We think our candles look the best but we're slightly biased.
What tools will I need to hang my Mezuzah
All of our Mezuzahs include a 3M tape strip to mount them to your doorpost. You will need a philips head screw driver for putting the back plate on the metal Mezuzahs.
Are the Mezuzahs suitable for outdoor use?
The metal Mezuzahs are perfect for outdoor use, but we don't recommend placing the ceramic ones where they will get rained on directly as they are not sealed in the back.
Care
How do I clean my ceramic Menorah or candlesticks?
After wax has cooled and hardened, you can use a dull tool (like a plastic utensil, or chopstick) to gently scrape off any excess wax. Ceramics are hand-washable with gentle detergent (treat it like you would a nice ceramic mug). If there is still residue on the product, soak it in hot tap-water for a few minutes to soften the wax and then wipe it clean.
How do I clean my metal Menorah?
Polished metal should be wiped with a soft, damp cloth- if deeper cleaning or polishing is required, use cleaner and polish specially made for aluminum or brass, depending which metal you are cleaning. If wax residue is still present after cleaning, soak it in hot tap-water for a few minutes to soften the wax and then wipe it clean.
Can I put the Kiddish cups in the dishwasher?
Honestly, it's probably fine, but we recommend hand washing because they are kind of fragile.
